Meeting notes from 10/18/10

We met this past Monday and talked on the phone with Jerry Allen from the Cultural + Planning Group. He gave up a proposed timeline and descriptions of the four sub-committees that they would like to work with (all this information is in the meeting notes).

We also had most of the committee members there to sign up for different sub-committees (here the link to the list). If you missed the meeting, please look over the descriptions and send me an email with which one (or two or three or four) you would like to be a part of: emiley@losalamos.org.

RFP will be released August 15 in the Albuquerque Journal

The Los Alamos County Government will release the RFP to be published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday, August 15.

The best way for potential responders to receive it, is to request it from the County Purchasing Agent, Jose Carreno at jose.carreno@lacnm.us.

The sterring committee is beginning review of a draft request for proposals for consultant services to facilitate development of the State required cultural plan for the Los Alamos Creative District.

State Resource Team Visits Los Alamos

A resource team composed of officials from various state agencies visited Los Alamos for several days in April and conducted focus groups with dozens of community members and organizations in order to provide advice to the recently designated Los Alamos Arts & Cultural District. Their work culminated in a public presentation that shared observations and recommendations from the visit.

The presentation was videotaped for playback on PAC-8 beginning in late April and a DVD is being made available for checkout at the Chamber. In addition, the presentation slides, background information about the Arts and Cultural District, and information about the steering committee working on this project are available by clicking here (large .pdf file; 2M).

Los Alamos MainStreet, in collaboration with the Los Alamos Arts Council and Los Alamos County applied for and received the New Mexico Arts and Culture District status for downtown Los Alamos in 2009. The resource team visit is a step in the process for fulfilling the requirements of maintaining that status and developing a plan for implementing the district. The basis for the district is sharing of Los Alamos’ unique creative heritage in the arts and science.

Goals for the Los Alamos Creative District include:

• Sharing the unique creative heritage of Los Alamos with residents and visitors;

• The development of the district will serve as a catalyst for supporting and developing service, restaurant, retail and hospitality businesses within the proposed district;

• The district will improve the community’s capacity for economic benefit from visitation and tourism by creating a stronger, more focused argument for visiting and spending time in downtown Los Alamos.

The NPS has published and is seeking comment on a study regarding creation of a Manhattan Project National Park unit. This has very favorable potential synergies with the Los Alamos Creative Culture District concept as noted in our proposal.

State Awards ACD Designation to Los Alamos

A large contingent from Los Alamos attended the State ceremony on August 28th.

Los Alamos Approved for Designation of NM Arts & Culture District

Los Alamos MainStreet has received notification that our proposal to establish a State designated Arts & Culture District in downtown Los Alamos has been accepted. The State expects to make public announcement of the designation in a ceremony tentatively planned for August 28th in Santa Fe. The proposal was reviewed by officials from the NM Arts Commission, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Department of Tourism, and Economic Development Department in reaching the determination.

The proposal (4.5 MB pdf file) was prepared and submitted by Los Alamos MainStreet early this year and included supporting endorsements by Los Alamos County, Los Alamos Arts Council, Los Alamos Historical Society, the Art Center at Fuller Lodge, and the Fuller Lodge Advisory Board.

A steering committee is being formed by Los Alamos MainStreet. Individuals interested in participating may email Kevin Holsapple at kevin[at]losalamos.org to express interest.

UNM BBER Arts and Culture Research Happening in Los Alamos

The Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) at the University of New Mexico is conducting research in Los Alamos for the New Mexico Economic Development Department's MainStreet program related to current and potential Arts and Cultural District designee communities, including Los Alamos. We will be interviewing a sample of the population, but would welcome comments from the entire community related to this designation and, more broadly, about the artistic, creative, and cultural activities happening in and near Los Alamos. We will post some topics related to this shortly. Discussions posted in reply to these topics may be used in our final report, though the individual reponders will remain anonymous.
